Fantastic and Free! Rockingham County Parent Resource Centers

I love libraries as much as the next person, but I have to let you in on a treasure trove of resources for your kids: the Rockingham County Parent Resource Centers. These centers are libraries of learning on steroids.

Everything in the Parent Resources Center (PRC) is completely free and trained staff is there to help you find the tools you need to enrich your child's education with books, puzzles, games and more that are fun, fantastic, and (did I mention?) free. There are learning games for preschoolers through 5th graders, focusing on math, reading and much more.

You have so many demands on your time, and it can be frustrating to find the right resources when you're at your wits end. These centers can help you. The materials available - free of charge - have been carefully chosen to support learning goals for your children.

The county’s two centers are located in former school buildings with similar materials for checkout. Here’s where to find them:

Parent Resource Center in Eden is located at 1130 Center Church Rd., in the old Douglass School Building. During the school year, it’s open from 10:00 to 6:00 on Mondays and from 8:30 to 4:30 Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Parent Resource Center in Reidsville is located at 212 Lawsonville Ave., in the former Lawsonville Elementary School building. This center is open on Tuesdays, from 10:00 until 6:00; Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 4:30; and Fridays from 8:30 to 4:30.

Summer hours differ as each center is open two days per week. Children have the chance to receive weekly surprises to encourage summer reading. This is a great time to check out games and activities to help students brush up or get ahead.

During the school year preschool families have special opportunities to pick up free monthly packets with a free book and learning activity. These Tots-N-Training packets are available at either center September through May. The Reidsville PRC also offers a free monthly Story Time for our preschool families. Sometimes there are special visitors at story times.

If you're a parent or caregiver, there are many resources available in the Parent Resource Centers. You don't need a lot of money or time - just a willingness to walk in the door and ask for help. I promise, the staff lives for this! Why spend your own money when you can borrow from more than 50,000 items?

Jenny Edwards and Catherine Massengale (PRC Lead Teacher) teamed up to bring you this blog post today. Hope you see you soon at one of the Parent Resources Centers! Let staff know you heard about the Center from this blog and receive a gift!
